The fate of this courthouse has been one of the most controversial preservation issues in Texas since the early 1980s.
In 1983 prior to commencing demolition, the county retained Kim Williams, AIA to produce a report analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of demolition and of reuse. The resulting feasibility study not only saved the historic building but also received an award from the Texas Historical Commission.
Since then, Williams has guided both civic leaders and the Commissioners Court in the procurement of state grant funds for the restoration process.
Restoration of the exterior of the courthouse began in January 2009 and is expected to be complete early in 2010.
The final restoration of this Texas Panhandle landmark will be the direct result of decades of dogged determination on the part of local preservationists partnered with the ongoing advice and assistance of TWC Architects.
